CHANGING SEASONS

Fanny Lam Christie
BA (Hons) Sculpture, Edinburgh College of Art
Fanny Lam Christie's work explores our relationship with nature and our responses to the changes in the landscape and environment influenced by human activity. "I use a combination of sculpture, painting and video to express my concerns about the impact of climate change on the contemporary landscape. I believe that in order to make a difference, we need to address our attitudes to nature, whether we can continue to abuse nature, or treat it as a finite resource to be nurtured and protected."
'After the rain' is a series of paintings portraying lonely trees standing in the reflections of the overflowing waters of various tributaries to the Tay through the changing seasons. She explains, "The tree is a symbol of many things - nature in the widest sense, regeneration, human life and knowledge. The tree under stress has been a subject of much of my work, and in these paintings I want to leave viewers to their own interpretations."
'Upstream' is a series of bronze sculptures made from recycled industrial metal. She explains, "The sculptures reflect the relationship of the salmon's homeward journey and the positive human intervention to improve its existing habitat. The sculptures have very formal qualities yet merge with an organic flow of movement. This is the balance I am trying to achieve in the sculpture. If we imagine that we apply the same sort of balance to our economic interests and ecological well being, we could make good progress." View the work.
