IMPRESSIONS OF A LANDSCAPE

The two artists who share the Ruthven Gallery exhibition space this month may have the same alma mater, as graduates of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, but their approaches to landscape could not be more different. Rosanne Barr, who graduated in 2003, paints moods to stimulate memories; Ann Wegmüller (class of '85) interprets the vista through abstraction, a new and more intuitive direction, she says, for her watercolour landscapes.
"Being liberated from the literal translation of the subject matter has allowed me to put colours down as I feel they should be, not as they are," says Wegmüller of her brightly coloured, Matisse-inspired works.
Barr prefers to mix her colours - thickly applied oils - on canvas, building up vibrancy with broad brush strokes with sometimes surprising aesthetic results. A satisfying contrast.
