An exhibition promoting environmental awareness through art opens at The Ruthven Gallery in Auchterarder this week. Opening on ‘World Environment Day’ – 5th June 2008 – the exhibition explores the destruction that is caused by climate change.

Mike Robinson, Chair of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland explains why the exhibition is so important, “Climate change is the defining issue of our generation and scientists have tried to communicate about this issue for forty years, but they have failed to capture the imagination and commitment of the wider public. We need artists to come to the fore, to help demystify our futures, to explain it and connect with people’s lives.”
The exhibition features the work of five artists all of whom have a strong message to give. Fanny Lam Christie said, ‘I use a combination of sculpture, painting and video to express my concerns about the impact of climate change.” She continued, “I believe that in order to make a difference, we need to address our attitudes to nature, whether we can continue to abuse nature, or treat it as a finite resource to be nurtured and protected.”
Fellow exhibitor Rosemary Bassett, said, “In our own small ways, it is possible for us to work for change in our environment; artists by their work can change minds as art parallels life.” Rosemary, who is exhibiting a range of collage work said, “Collage is an exciting and unpredictable medium; I have used water-based glues, simple home-based print techniques and recycled fragments of old paintings.”
Other leading contemporary artists on show are Yvonne MacDougall, Andy McIntosh and Louise Balaam. Louise, who has recently been accepted to exhibit at the Royal Academy in London said, “I strongly believe that the natural world is a crucial and irreplaceable resource, which we are in danger of undervaluing.”
Mike Robinson concluded, “I believe that the Changing Seasons exhibition is a wonderful example of how to utilise the power of art and artists to communicate vitally important messages about the future of our planet.” ‘Changing Seasons’ at the Ruthven Gallery runs until the 16th July.”
