COASTAL INSPIRATION

On display at the Ruthven Gallery this month is a collection of artwork by a group of Perthshire artists taking their inspiration from the coast.

For years the coast has provided inspiration to many leading artists, with the likes of Peploe and Cadell developing love affairs with the West Coast Islands. This inspiration continues today and is evident with this collection of work on show at the Auchterarder gallery.
Perth-born Iona Leishman spent much of her childhood enjoying the west coast of Argyll, and this is reflected in her work. “As a teenager, I discovered the island of Canna and since, I have visited many times to paint,” she says. Iona has recently been elected to The Glasgow Art Club.
The changing environment along the coast is one of the reasons why many artists find inspiration. As Margaret Evans comments, “I enjoy painting islands such as Skye, where the light changes constantly and the same scene is never boring.” The sea has always been a welcome and wistful sight and has inspired Margaret.
Fellow exhibitors, Allan Perera-Liyanage and Arie Vardi, share this influence and are also exhibiting a number of pieces painted with Scotland’s coast as the subject.
A View to the Sea runs until March 4
